These young women produced exceptional essays that highlighted the flaws of their nation and also championed its potential. It is important to note that the girls who participated in our essay contest were 13-16 years old. Despite their youth, they are not ignorant of the current political and social climate of Nigeria. Currently, Nigeria leads the world with the highest poverty rate. It is alarming that in the country that stands as one of the giants of Africa and is home to some of the wealthiest individuals both on the continent Africa and the world, the citizens are suffering.

According to United Nations statistics,  “gender inequality is a major cause and effect of hunger and poverty: it is estimated that 60 percent of chronically hungry people are women and girls” (UN Women, 2018).

When there is poverty, young girls are affected the most.
