The Story of My Life: A letter of Gratitude

This is a letter sent by one of the Anointed Girls. She is sharing her story of hardship, hope, and finding a lifeline. The Anointed Girl’s Project was established to help girls who have similar stories.

Dear Anointing,

My name is Happiness Ozonwachukwu. I was born in April 2006. I am from Azi-agu community in Uha local government area of Enugu State, Southeastern Nigeria. I was born and brought up in Burkina Faso (a country in West Africa). I later relocated to Togo (a country in West Africa) with my family at a young age. My family comprises of my late father Mr. Romanus Progress Ozonwachukwu, my mother Mrs. Ngozi Blessing Ozonwachukwu and my brother Wisdom Ozonwachukwu.

My late father was working with an electrical company in China. My paternal uncles were envious of my father’s wealth. My father was a good man. He died in 2010, at the airport in Togo. He slumped and died as he was coming down from the plane. This was the story my uncles told my mother after she had called my father several times without receiving a response. They did not inform my mother about the death of my father for a long time. Before hearing the news of his death, she had left Togo to her sister’s house in Lagos, Nigeria. She intended to travel to my father’s place (my father’s extended family house) to inform them that she had not heard from him for a very long time. But before she could travel, my uncles knowing that she had left Togo and was in Lagos (they were monitoring her), came to her in Lagos and broke the news to her. On hearing the news, she was so shocked that she passed out.

My father was buried a month later. After the burial, my uncles called my mother to a meeting in which they asked her to hand over the children (my brother and I)  to them. She refused. They took all my father’s properties and threatened my mother to stay away. They left us with absolutely nothing. My mother took us back to Togo and was able to raise money from her friends, which enabled her to start a small business. She started a restaurant business. The business was doing well until 2015 when she had a fatal accident that almost claimed her life. Thank God for sparing her life but she broke her right leg. She spent six months in the hospital and her savings was depleted..

After her treatment, my mother managed to start business again but unfortunately other problems developed. I developed a deep wound in my leg and due to the lack of proper medical care, my leg started decaying. There was no money for treatment. Our family’s financial situation deteriorated so my brother and I dropped out from school. We started hawking on the streets of Togo, in order to make ends meet. We were unable to afford housing so we were forced to relocate back to Nigeria. On getting to Nigeria, we went to the CAC Prayer CampGround, a place for homeless individuals to stay. I decided to get a job so I can help provide food for my family members. I got a job as a sales girls in a retail shop and that was where I met Pastor Emeka Williams, the Anointed Girl’s Coordinator and pastor at God’s Cover Church. He invited me to God’s Cover and I came with my mother. He prayed for us and told my mother that God has remembered her. He encouraged us and started giving us money for food and transportation to church. He also took up the treatment of the wound in my leg after he had prayed. In fact, I am short of words, God will bless him and his family.

Thanks to his kindness, I will be going back to school this year! I want to thank the Anointed Girl’s Project and Pastor Chuks Onuoha, the founder of God’s Cover international, for helping me resume my education during this upcoming school term. The ability to complete my education is the greatest gift that I have ever received. Words cannot describe my appreciation. I hope to make a change in the lives of others just as these strangers have blessed my life. I can’t express the joy I have right now for going back to school. God bless you. God bless God’s Cover Church International. God bless Anointed Girl’s Project.

Thank You,

Happiness
