THE EFFECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON TODAY’S YOUTH

3rd Place: Ajayi Oluwatomiwa Favour

Social media is a means of interaction between people to share, communicate and exchange ideas. I believe social media has done more harm than good to youths. My points are discussed in the following paragraphs.

Furthermore, our society through social media is down with the get-rich-quick syndrome, exposing our youths to laziness and the ability to do anything for money, because of the society they find themselves in; where money is respected regardless of where it is gotten from.

Starting, social media has created platforms for the spreading of fake news and risky trends which has caused danger to our grooming youths. Social media has opened the platform for youths to try crazy trends, For example, TikTok has exposed female youths to opening their bodies, and male youths to smoking harmful substances.

Additionally, it is said that social media has become an important communication and information tool, but the question is, what kind of information is disseminated, and what kind of communication is taking place.

Youths have seen social media as a medium to scam people of their hard-earned money and then they communicate to themselves what they do and how they “cash out.”

It has exposed young ones of our generation to bullying in the media which can lead to inflated self-esteem.

Social media has exposed our youths to cyberbullying because most youths find it as a means to shame and insult themselves on the internet. It has exposed young ones of our generation to bullying in the media which can lead to inflated self-esteem.

Through social media, people can communicate and this leads to a decrease in face-to-face interactions and decreased productivity, it has also reduced the efficiency of human labor.

Science has it that social media can lead to depression, anxiety, and loneliness, mostly said that lonely people spend more time on the phone. It has given way to body shaming and a lack of prestige in personality.

Social media has given youths the platforms for unnecessary and unhealthy competition. Most people portray their lives vigorously on social media and many are doing this because of the oppression of the rich ones.

Social media has exposed youths to pornographic content as it is no respecter of age. It does not know children, youths, or teenagers.

Consequently, it can now be said that every other advantage of social media is inconsequential. I hope with these few points of mine I have been able to enlighten us more on the negative effects of social media that have been overlooked, but the disadvantages are way more and cause more damage to youths than the advantages.
